Unity - Virtue of the fortnight

Unity - Virtue of the fortnight

Author: Admin  /  Categories: Curriculum, General, Parent Education  /

Unity is the virtue for the next fortnight and it’s an easy one to translate for children of any age.  For the younger children, discuss ideas around sticking together as a family.  For the children going to camp next week, what would unity mean for the group?

Conversely with so much disunity happening in the world, there’s plenty the older children to discuss. Why not jump onto Crinkling News or Behind the News websites, current affairs for children, and start talking.

Unity is a very powerful virtue, and it brings great strength to us as individuals and the greater whole.  When we practice unity, we allow ourselves to feel connected to everything and everyone.  Unity is a powerful force that can light up the world and bring about change, peace and even an end to conflicts.

“He who experiences the unity of life, sees his own self in all beings, and all beings in his own self, and looks on everything with an impartial eye......” (Bhagavad-Gita V1, 29)

How do you practice it?

With unity you strive for harmony with your family at home and your human family around the world. Unity brings peace.  Without a sense of unity of all life, people do things that hurt the planet, or they treat the earth and each other as if they don’t matter.

When unity exists in a family, you come together, listen and find solutions together.  You avoid blame.  Differences don’t have to hurt.

Guide for home

We provide the following simple guide for parents to discuss virtues as a family at home.

What would unity look like if....

  • your friends toss rubbish in the park?
  • you overhear someone teasing a child of a different race and calling him names?
  • you become agree with a family member and want to say hurtful things?

Do you solve conflict through listening and finding solutions, or laying blame?

Do you care for all living things?Do you see gifts in differences?
