January 1, 1891 : Maria Montessori and the Pope
Maria Montessori wanted badly to study medicine, but was denied admission to the University of Rome due to her gender. Pope Leo XII, who was very learned in his own right, encouraged her admittance saying that he, "knew of no authority to deny the mission of healing to women." This papal intercession secured her a spot as a medical student.
