The under three program at Montessori East has evolved over the last 4 years and we now have around 90 families who are part of this beautiful community each week. Although we cannot accommodate each of these children into Cycle 1 we do feel that we touch many of these families with the Montessori approach that they can continue to embrace the philosophy into their daily lives.
There are four programs: Pregnancy to 6 month old infants (non-movers), 6 months to 12 months (movers), 12 months to 17 months (walkers) and 18 months to 2 ½ - 3 years (toddlers). By breaking up the ages we are able to meet the needs of these particular age group.
At the beginning we work with the parents, and gradually our focus is more on the children. By the time they reach the toddler program most children are familiar with the environment and are happy to work with the us and separate from the parent with confidence. It is a beautiful healthy separation that happens over a period of time.
In most sessions we have topics that we discuss and a summary of the notes are sent home each week. We also give talks on popular topics such as toileting, freedom and limits and how to set up home to aid independence.
We regularly focus on 'observation': Observing without intervening, observing the way the children solve problems, observe how they sort out conflicts. The parents are also asked to observe the Montessori guides (Aristea and myself) and how they interact with the children and give freedom with limits.
