The academic & lifelong benefits of a Montessori education

Experiential learning, not memorisation

Albert Einstein once said, "Learning is experience; everything else is just information."

Montessori education recognises the importance of 'experiencing' and strives to provide a comprehensive education that offers students experiential learning using materials, tools and project work to set them up for lifelong success and fulfilment in their daily lives and future endeavors.

Using a holistic approach, Montessori focuses on developing the whole child and equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in both their personal and professional lives - including but not limited to executive function, creative problem solving and good communication skills with people of all ages.

Traditional education is often criticised as viewing children through a narrow lens, focusing solely on preparing students for exams and academic benchmarks, which drives the curriculum to prioritise memorisation and standardised testing over and above developing crucial life skills.

More than academics

A 2020 review shows that based on academic outcomes, Montessori students performed about 1/4 of a standard deviation better than students in traditional education. While this appears to be meaningful on paper and to anyone looking at academic performance as a reason to choose a school, the Montessori approach offers a balance between absorbing concepts and information and the 'soft skills' - communicating effectively and articulately, solving problems, thinking critically and making informed decisions with confidence and skill. These skills form the foundation which will help children navigate life's challenges, negotiate perspectives and find happiness and fulfilment in their life choices, in addition to the profession they choose.

The Montessori teacher is trained differently

The teachers are trained as 'the enablers' of mastering academic subjects while supporting the children to self-direct their learning. The guidance is subtle yet deliberate. This method of teaching allows students to advance at their own pace and build a strong foundation for future learning that plays out into their adolescence and beyond.
